Regeneration Across the (Manchester) Board

Posted by: David Marlor

I’ve harped on enough about the projects transforming the streets of Manchester’s City Centre. But it is possibly more exciting to hear about the regeneration in Manchester’s satellite towns, which points to more complete recovery. For years the death of the high street has been heralded; indeed, I would have found it difficult to argue when even McDonalds quit Rochdale’s town centre in 2011. In more modern history, Oldham and Rochdale have been identified as some of the most deprived areas of the UK.As a Rochdale girl myself, these town centres were my teenage-self’s Saturday-morning-stomping-ground. It has been sad to see the shops and shoppers dwindle in recent years. But the refurbishment of the Oldham Town Hall, Ashton Baths and the Rochdale Town Centre is nothing other than heartening. Here’s to turning the corner!

“Operators like these represent another big step forward in Oldham’s regeneration. Interest remains extremely strong in the other units and talks are ongoing with potential tenants with more announcements set to come in the summer.”
