A day in the life of a Trainee Solicitor at Glaisyers ETL

By May 2, 2023Careers

A little bit about me…

I started my training contract at Glaisyers in March 2023 (not too long ago), this was following a summer placement scheme I took part in during August 2022. This placement gave me a great insight into how the firm operate on a day-to-day basis as well as meeting the team ahead of starting in my role as Trainee Solicitor.

A typical day as a trainee solicitor…

8:45: I arrive at the office (with a coffee of course) and start setting up for the day. My first seat is based in the Residential Property Department.  The team deals with numerous transactions including sales, purchases, and re-mortgaging.

9-1: My tasks in the team mainly involve drafting documents and communicating with clients or other law firms. I have currently been drafting Reports on Mortgages and Searches. This is essentially compiling a report based on the search results we have been provided. I also liaise with Mortgage Lenders regularly to ensure we can exchange/ complete the transaction at a set time. The residential team has been very busy since I joined so I also regularly open new files on our system enabling us to proceed with the matter.

1-2: This is the firm’s lunch break. I usually go for a 10–15-minute walk, the office is located perfectly for this, as we are right in the heart of Manchester City Centre.

2-5:30: The afternoon can vary in terms of my tasks, for the most part I am usually finishing/starting tasks that I have been sent in the morning and ensuring my emails are clear ready for the next day. Last week I sat in on my first Charity Committee meeting with the team. We discussed upcoming events that the firm would be interested in to support Francis House who are the firms Charity of the Year. Usually, the afternoon is when I receive 1-1 feedback from members of the team for the work, I have carried out for them. This can be anything from reviewing reports on title and contract to raising enquires with another firm. As I am a trainee, I find this really helpful as naturally there will be things that I am unsure on and need help with.

Events as a Trainee Solicitor

Being a trainee at the firm comes with lots of opportunities. Glaisyers ETL is constantly pushing me to grow and network with others. On my first day, I attended a networking event with the Harold Sharp Accountancy Team who are also part of ETL GLOBAL UK. The event was a very positive experience and provided an even warmer welcome to the firm than I had already encountered. We already have a follow up summer event in the works.

I was also lucky enough to acquire tickets through the firm to the Manchester Young Professionals Networking event held at the Alchemist in Spinningfields at the beginning of April. This was a lovely experience getting to know peers whilst trying the Alchemist’s new food menu.  There are lots of opportunities with the firm for events like this and many more.

All in all I thoroughly enjoy being a part of the Glaisyers ETL team and cannot wait for the rest of my journey with the firm.
