MANAGING PARTNERS COLUMN: Lifting out of the Gloom – By Nick Johnson

It is now 6 months since the firm split with our Longsight office to focus on becoming a full service law firm offering legal solutions to businesses and families.

The legal landscape is changing and particularly in Manchester there have been some big losses and some mergers which has resulted in the loss of some big names. We have been around since 1974 and we pride ourselves that our partners also own the business and have an understanding for the challenges facing our clients in building a business.

We believe there is still a need in the business community to build a firm where the partners providing the advice also own the business. We believe in taking ownership of our clients issues and providing solutions and not problems.

This is the thinking behind our alliance with former staff of Fruhman Davies Livingstones (FDL). The two firms have known each other for many years and indeed referred work to each other in the instances of conflicts. It is a natural progression that we have decided to join forces with a shared philosophy of providing clients with legal solutions at a fair cost.

In the last 6 months we have noticed an increase in instructions in a number of areas. Most notably in the property sector we are benefitting in part from the governments much vaunted “help to buy” scheme and from a thirst by developers for land opportunities. We are also strong in the manufacturing sector and it is a pleasure to be involved in businesses that are expanding and succeeding in not only UK markets but also overseas. In dealing with our clients families we have also seen an increase in acting in the financial affairs of vulnerable adults and for those clients who want to protect their financial affairs for the benefit of their families.

We have a clear focus which is to become a £9M-£10M business within 5 years and we will take steps over the next few months to strengthen our teams with lateral hires and achieve some organic growth while sticking to our core value . It is important that our clients see us as being big enough to trust and small enough to care.At the core of all this activity is our loyal client base and to me, there are three things a client cares about and they are how much it is going to cost them, what they are going to get for their money and how long it will take. This is where we will focus to deliver the legal solutions our clients expect.
