The Unit has for many years provided a high level of expert advice in these areas of law. We offer a thorough and holistic approach to Welfare Benefits and debt problems which links up with the advice we provide on all aspects of law within the Unit.
We have an excellent reputation for advice in these areas and can deal with any Welfare Benefits problems, be it a question of simply arguing with the Department of Work and Pensions regarding a late payment or the more complex Welfare Benefits cases, for example, those raising human rights issues, appeals to the Social Security Commissioner, by way of Judicial Review Proceedings in the High Court or by way of an application to the European Court of Human Rights where we currently have two high profile cases.
Our work involves disputes about the following:-
- Income Support
- Working and Child Tax Credits
- Job Seekers Allowance
- Child Benefit
- Disability Living Allowance
- Carers’ Benefits
- Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit
We also deal with disputes regarding benefits overpayments, all aspects of Appeals, backdating of benefits and the link between criminal proceedings regarding benefits overpayments and underlying benefit entitlement. We have particular expertise in relation to Housing and Council Tax Benefit. Richard Copson and Salim Kuraishe of the Unit have many years experience in relation to these two benefits in particular. They have an excellent reputation with advice agencies, opponents and the Court for advice in this area, particularly in relation to Possession Proceedings which are often caused by unacceptable delays in the processing of benefit claims.
