Housing Disrepair All landlords are obliged to maintain the structure and exterior of their properties to reasonable standards of repair. This can include fixing problems with:
- Damp
- Rotten window
- Subsidence
- Faulty gas appliances
- Leaking roof
If the landlord fails to fix his property, and the tenant has complained, the tenant can FORCE the landlord to do the works and get compensation too.
Defending Possession Sometimes tenants face eviction through the Courts as a result of these problems:
- Rent arrears
- Neighbour nuisance problems
- Non compliance with a term of the tenancy.
The Housing and Welfare Law Unit’s job is to help those tenants stay in their houses
Unlawful Eviction Sometimes landlords harass their tenants and even kick them out of their houses. REMEMBER only a County Court Bailiff can evict a tenant from his home. If the landlord does it or attempts to do it he is committing A CRIMINAL OFFENCE
We help tenants who have been harassed or unlawfully evicted by their landlords and get them COMPENSATION
Homeless Sometimes, people find themselves on the streets through no fault of their own. The Council have a duty to re-house those people if they can be considered vulnerable.
Often, however, Councils do not help the homeless and that’s where we come in. The Housing and Welfare Law Unit help homeless people in challenging Councils and force them to re-house those people with SUITABLE ACCOMODATION
